Kent Solar Power To The People
Orchard Community Energy launches fundraising bond during
Community Energy Fortnight (3rd to 18th September)
During Community Energy Fortnight Orchard Community Energy, one of the first community-owner solar projects in Kent, is launching a bond to support the ongoing finance of the project. The 5 MW Orchard Solar Farm is a community-owned solar project that is generating clean, renewable energy from the sun. £3.8 million has already been raised towards its purchase thanks to secured loans and equity, but now Orchard Community Energy, is raising a further £1.8 million towards the £6 million needed to support the ongoing finance of the project. The bond is being launched on 14th September.
Chair of Orchard Community Energy, Penny Shepherd comments “This bond offer is a great opportunity for people in Kent to help to develop locally owned, renewable energy. The Orchard bond will pay a return of 5.5% a year for three years. On top of that, those who invest will have the satisfaction of helping to reduce the impact of climate change, strengthen local energy supplies and improve energy security here.
Orchard Community Energy has been set up by experienced local professionals supported by national experts. We are asking the people of Kent to put power into their own hands by investing in our bonds.”
Orchard Community Energy’s 5MW array has already started generating energy which is being sold to the national grid. The community ownership model means that surplus profits are used to build a community fund worth up to £3 million. This fund will be reinvested back into community projects in Swale and Medway.
